El Dorado 15 Year Old Special Reserve

El Dorado 15 Year Old Special Reserve

While this rum has some controversy due to adding both sugar and colouring it is a winner in my books. Part of the Luxury Cask Aged line of products at El Dorado this rum is the second youngest with the others being 12, 21, and 25 years aged. A blend of rums no younger than 15 years and according to the El Dorado website it extends up to 25. Produced on the Enmore and Diamond Coffey stills, the Port Mourant double wooden pot still and the Versailles single wooden pot still it goes on to be aged in bourbon barrels.

Personal Review

Appearance (5/5):
The unique (to the line) bottle design and excellent label make this a stand out product. Once poured this product is no slouch either, the deep amber hue gives it a richness and visual quality that is very appealing.

Nose (18/25):
The nose is slightly muted and I can never quite pinpoint what it is I am getting. There are hints of Fruit and floral scents intermingled with the more pronounced caramel, butterscotch and candied orange peel. If i search i can get a hint of nuttyness. I don’t this I can accurately point out just how sweet the nose is on this rum.

Flavour (50/60):
The alcohol starts off smooth and progresses to warming. The drink is semi-sweet rum follows up on the sweet scents giving away the added sugar nature of the rum. Aged in bourbon barrels I would have expected a more whiskey like profile but this is a rum through and through; Oranges, vanilla, caramel, banana, tobacco and other citrus notes make up the majority of the flavours in this rum. The charred oak coming through but certainly not much for this age of a product.

Finish (9/10):
The flavours linger long past the liquids departure, contributing to the balance and complexity of this excellent rum.

Total: 82/100
